To Sleep, Perchance To Dream

I don't sleep well. It takes me hours to fall asleep and I wake up at the drop of a hat. I've been like that since I was little.

I remember being awake in the middle of the night, making up stories to entertain myself until I fell asleep again.

Over the years I've tried all the typical ways to aide sleep, sticking to pattern, cutting out caffeine, you name it I've tried it.

Working overnight shifts on the morning show for a year and a half did not help at all, but then I had some lovely pills prescribed by my doctor to help me sleep during the day.

Now, I'm less likely to take a sleeping pill, and more likely to end up wide awake in the middle of the night watching Unsolved Mysteries on SpikeTV. I flippin' love that show.

I can say that besides my shrinking fat ass, I'm seeing another positive side effect of working out regularly... I'm sleeping better.

Better is of course a relative term. For me I'm getting an average of 3 nights of decent sleep. The other nights I'm up, usually playing Word Warp on my phone while Bella looks on angrily.

No one will be happier when I get my sleep pattern regulated than my angry, spoiled bull dog.

  1. Hi. Just reading various OK blogs & found yours.

I went from 350lbs to 200 lbs in 10 months and the one item that motivated me to start was developing sleep apena (I'm male, 40's). Dropping the weight allowed me to get rid of the breathng machine. I won't bore you with my exact story.

but, do you snore? One of the big cues for a physical sleep problem is snoring.

I wanted to point out that I did all the same things you did before I got the machine and nothing helped. I went to a sleep lab (after falling asleep while driving in rush hour traffic) and that got me on the machine which lead to a clearer head and then to weight loss. You might have already done this as I have not read your entire blog but go to a sleep lab (get a doc referal) and see if your life-long problem is something physical that they can identify.

Regardless; congrats on the weigth loss plan. It is wonderful to to sleep again and do little things like put on my socks without effort!

tl;dr = go to a sleep lab and get tested for disorders. It is worth it.

  2. I hadn't thought of that, but I will look into it.

    Thanks for the advice!
