Going back to cheese.

I give up.  Well, kind of.

You see I've been vegan almost a year, minus a few slip ups, and it's been pretty good at keeping my platelets in check, but it's stopped working.  In the last 4 months my platelets have dropped in half, still okay but not good.

So the vegan thing isn't working like it used to.  Not surprising, this is the 3rd experimental treatment I've done that stopped working, so while I hunt for something new to try I'm going to give myself back cheese.

I'm sticking to the other vegan-ness of my diet.  I'm not going back to meat, milk, butter, etc.  I'll be mostly vegan, with cheese.  My body is craving iron and protein anyway since my blood is crazy-thin again.

I've been taking my vitamins, iron and extra vitamin C religiously.  And I'm so sick of spinach I could vomit. But the body needs what it needs.

  1. Do you like pumpkin seeds (pepitas)? They are very rich in iron. Beans and lentils are pretty iron-y, too. And if you don't mind the flavor, add a tablespoon or two of blackstrap molasses to smoothies. It's an excellent source of iron. It's especially good in pumpkin smoothies. I would recommend a green smoothie with spinach, canned pumpkin, molasses, a banana, cinnamon, ginger, and some kind of non-dairy milk. I throw all this out because I really can't stomach much spinach either, and though I certainly don't have the blood problems you do, I get really anemic around my lady time, so I always try to boost my iron levels then.
